TAVUA

We can sit and watch the world go by - and look where it's going!

Off the crowded tourism routes in the South Pacific, lies the island nation of Vanuatu. Among the secluded forests high in the mountain ridges of her largest island Espirito Santo, Rick Williamson, a man from New Zealand, enters the social fabric of the Sky People and leaves as Tavua—‘Man from the Jungle’. »»

BY THE WAY, WE WENT TO BADRINATH

Delicious and sublime, guarding Badrinath.

There are places in the Himalayas, where peaks that look like confectionery with generous toppings of delicious cream, heighten your appetite for things ‘super’ natural and you begin to hear the flute in the wind and the cymbals in the water. Supriya Mukherjee visited Badrinath. »»

MEET THE MIGHTY MAHSEER

Not just a lily, it's a welcome bouquet, silly—in the middle of the Cauvery!

If you want to go fishing,do not let anyone cry fowl. That is, if you are involved in catch-and-release, under competent supervision. On the beautifully forested banks of River Cauvery, Carol Carr did it anyway—she tried to opt for birdwatching when faced with the challenge of angling for The King—the mahseer. The bottom line is that she left with no regrets. Kalyan Patra caught the fish he had hoped for and his cameras, the highlights of their visit. »»

DRAGONS & DAMSELS

A sunset worthy of a dragon.

In this day and age, it takes a bespectacled knight like Ranjit Lal to shoot dragons. All considered, it is fortunate that he is armed with only a camera— this guy shoots dragons and damsels with equal aplomb! »»

CAPITAL COLOURS

Look beyond the crass commercial complexes, look through the vehicular smog, says Manomayee Purohit and you can enjoy Delhi’s great trees. Ashok Nath’s photographs will convince you to go and look for yourself— Delhi’s trees are older and more appropriately colourful than the recent crops of politicians visible in the capital. »»

I, LAND

A maze off the St Lawrence riverway - typifies the Thousand Islands region.

Looking for a place to land, a place to call your home? An island of your own, maybe? Lokesh Abrol takes you to a place where there are thousands to be found. Kalyan Patra surveyed the area . . . Just as he got his hopes up, he was told that it takes at least one decent-sized tree to qualify a sandbar or a rock in the river as an island. »»

SHIMLA

Reflect on it - it is better to take a train to Shimla.

When visiting Shimla, leave your car behind and let the driving force be the railways. It might take a little longer but as Sangeeta Pinto points out, it works out a lot better - on your eyes and lungs. »»

IN FOCUS

Cosy and well fed in a family setting.

TOWARDS THE end of the 13th Century, the Buddhist city of Polonnaruwa was mysteriously abandoned. Relentlessly, the surrounding jungle engulfed the deserted city. For seven centuries, only some mischievous and intelligent small monkeys inhabited this lost city. These Toque macaques are close cousins of the Reticulum and Rhesus monkeys of India and are found only in Sri Lanka. »»
