FOOTPRINTS

Relics of marine-life from long ago.

There is more to the Rann of Kutch than what meets the casual eye. This arid land is abundant in marine fossil wealth—our window to the past that has always intrigued us. Jugal Kishor Tiwari gives us a glimpse into these marvels of Kutch, where he hopes to find a Jurassic Park of his own. »»

FEED BACK

Dear Editor, Visiting the SRISHTI stall at the Delhi Book Fair was a marvellous experience. The magnificent enlargements/ posters displayed at your stall broke the monotony of the exhibition. Your special fair offers were irresistible and I, of course, made full use of them. However, I cannot help but point out that you should come out with a greater variety of posters—preferably of scenic mountains or birds. When can we expect to feast our eyes on these new posters? »»

MILES TO GO BEFORE HE PEEPS

Celestial jewels sparkling - the Kabru, Kanchendzonga and Pandim peaks viewed from Dzongri top.

Six no-trumps-doubled at Dzongri. Forced marches and games of bridge to boot. Diplomat, photographer and trekker Deb Mukharji leads a diverse group to see Kanchendzonga at sunrise, some of whom, like danseuse and computer scientist-turned-eloquentauthor M. Bai, seem to have found both the game and the hike painful, though ultimately with no regrets. WITH 'KHADAS', silk scarves embossed with good luck symbols, wafting gently around our necks, we sped across the hidden valley of rice. We had just lost our hearts to the handsome young Sikkimese who had welcomed us, with the solemn gesture of adorning us with those khadas. From Bagdogra to Siliguri through the town of Melli, we entered Sikkim. The undulating Tista and Rangsit, of the plains, transformed into churning, mountainous rivers as the road twisted and climbed along the edges of the pristine forested hill-sides, into the cooler temperate heights. »»
